Dear Cornerstone Family:
This Sunday, we will continue in our sermon series in the Lord's Prayer as we look at the second petition that the Lord Jesus teaches us, "Your kingdom come." This is such a short request. What does it mean?
Believe it or not, this prayer opens up a treasure trove of kingdom theology that we will not possibly have time to explore this Sunday, so I thought I would share some theological nuggets with you beforehand so that you can be familiar with the concepts.
At the heart of Jesus' message is the kingdom of God. We looked at this months ago when we studied Matthew 4:17, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” This "big idea", the Kingdom of God, is the meta-theology or meta-narrative that guides every biblical writer. This idea teaches us that the God of the Bible is the ruler of the kingdom of heaven. The Bible Scholar Graham Goldsworthy defines it this way, "The Kingdom of God is God’s people in God’s place under God’s rule and blessing."
The Kingdom of God also has other titles in the New Testament, such as "the kingdom of heaven," "the kingdom of Christ," "the kingdom of the Lord," or simply, "the kingdom." This metatheology undergirds the teaching of the entire Bible. The Scriptures reveal God using a number of metaphors, but the primary imagery that Biblical writers used for God was that of a divine king. Alongside the basic conviction that God is the supreme King is the belief that he reigns over heaven and earth as his kingdom.
This Sunday, we will consider what does it mean to pray "Your kingdom come."
Also, I want to invite every one of you to the church cookout on Sunday, April 6, after the second service. We are having beautiful weather, so this is a great time for us to fellowship, enjoy our new outdoor space, and appreciate the landscaping that is being installed as we speak. As a bonus, all the proceeds and donations will go to support our two mission teams going out this summer to Warm Springs and Quiet Waters. Please RSVP today!
See you Sunday! Please prepare your hearts for communion that we will celebrate on this fifth Sunday.
by His grace and to His praise,
