Dear Cornerstone Family:
It has been a tough few weeks at Cornerstone as we weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15). We have dear brothers and sisters who have experienced loss ... some expected and yet still difficult. Let us remember to pray for one another and encourage one another ... all the more as we see the Day approaching (Hebrews 10:25).
The hope that we have in our grief is the hope of the resurrection! Of course, "the Day" approaching is the return of Christ, but our hope for His return is because of His resurrection! Our hope is not a blind hope! It is a sure hope that all who are in Christ will rise to be with Him forever in the new heavens and the new earth! As Easter approaches, this is the great reminder that we need: in Christ alone our hope is found.
How can we be sure of our hope? ... Think with me as Easter approaches about the Nicene Creed. One important Christological section of the creed states:
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and was made human.
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered and was buried.
The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again with glory
to judge the living and the dead.
This portion of the creed mentions five important milestones of God the Son's ministry for the election. First, His incarnation - being born in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago. Second, His sacrifice of atonement - being crucified for our sins on the cross. Third, His resurrection - rising on the third day and appearing to over 500 witnesses. Fourth, His ascension - being raised up into the clouds before His Apostles. There remains only one more act for Jesus to accomplish, His return. Jesus will come again in power and glory, and all things will be made new.
The resurrection that we celebrate and remember each year around this time is a the reminder that Christ has come, Christ has lived, and Christ will come again. He is our sure hope. He is the reason we do not grieve as those who have no hope.
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore, encourage one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 ESV)
I encourage you to make plans to worship with us this coming Holy Week as we look at Psalms 118, 22, and 24 and look in hope to the Messiah! Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory!” (Psalm 24:10 ESV)
See you Sunday!
