Dear Church Family and Friends,
The late scholar F.F. Bruce once wrote a book entitled, The Hard Sayings of Jesus. Some of the teachings that we have been exploring in The Sermon on the Mount certainly fit that category.
Last week we looked at Jesus' teaching on adultery and his heart-piercing teaching that even lust in our thoughts and imaginations is adultery in God's sight. This week we will study another hard topic that has virtually touched every family in our society ... divorce.
There is so much that can be said and there is so much that we need to learn when it comes to the Bible's teaching on marriage and divorce. We will look at just one specific teaching of Jesus in Matthew 5:31-32, but we will also need to understand that this is not all the teaching of the Bible on these topics. It will be important for us to use the "rule of faith" and interpret Scripture with Scripture as we examine all the Bible's teachings on these things.
As we prepare to study this important teaching, I want to highlight two resources that can be helpful to us in summarizing the Bible's teaching on these matters. The first the Westminster Confession of Faith, chapter 24, Of Marriage and Divorce.
Marriage is to be between one man and one woman: neither is it lawful for any man to have more than one wife, nor for any woman to have more than one husband, at the same time.
Marriage was ordained for the mutual help of husband and wife, for the increase of mankind with legitimate issue, and of the church with an holy seed; and for preventing of uncleanness.
It is lawful for all sorts of people to marry, who are able with judgment to give their consent. Yet it is the duty of Christians to marry only in the Lord. And therefore such as profess the true reformed religion should not marry with infidels, papists, or other idolaters: neither should such as are godly be unequally yoked, by marrying with such as are notoriously wicked in their life, or maintain damnable heresies.
Marriage ought not to be within the degrees of consanguinity or affinity forbidden by the Word. Nor can such incestuous marriages ever be made lawful by any law of man or consent of parties, so as those persons may live together as man and wife.
Adultery or fornication committed after a contract, being detected before marriage, giveth just occasion to the innocent party to dissolve that contract. In the case of adultery after marriage, it is lawful for the innocent party to sue out a divorce: and, after the divorce, to marry another, as if the offending party were dead.
Although the corruption of man be such as is apt to study arguments unduly to put asunder those whom God hath joined together in marriage: yet, nothing but adultery, or such willful desertion as can no way be remedied by the church, or civil magistrate, is cause sufficient of dissolving the bond of marriage: wherein, a public and orderly course of proceeding is to be observed; and the persons concerned in it not left to their own wills, and discretion, in their own case.
Of course, the WCF does not address every possible case or every possible situation that may arise in marriage or divorce. The Church has wrestled with these issues for thousands of years. The PCA has an official position paper. It is quite long but has some helpful and pastoral guidance on dealing with these issues if you want to take the time to read it. At the very least, you can scroll to the end and read the summary suggestions adopted by the 1992 General Assembly.
I present all this information to you so that you can understand our church's official position on these matters as we seek to understand the Bible's teaching on divorce and marriage. Let's all be in prayer for our families, for our marriages, for future marriages, and for the Lord's wisdom to teach us as we work through these soul-piercing passages.
See you Sunday!
