Pastor's Corner - Priorities
Dear Friends,
I don't want to make too much or too little of politics. There are many other things in our lives that should be at the top of our priorities. Things like our relationship with the Lord, our families, our marriages, our church, are some of those things that are more important. I think we all know this intuitively, but it is good to be reminded. Solomon summarizes it quite well in the wisdom literature of Ecclesiastes, “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13 ESV)
But politics are important. Christians are called to glorify God in all of life and this certainly includes how we vote. I thought it might be helpful to list some Scriptures for you and me to use to pray and process how we are to make sense of this intense political season in America.
*Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. (Romans 13:1–3 ESV)
*Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. (Psalm 20:7 ESV)
*I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20 ESV)
*The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made. (Psalm 145:9 ESV)Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. (Titus 3:1-2 ESV)
*But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. (1 Peter 2:9–12 ESV)
I pray these truths of God's Word will help you pray, will help you focus, and will help us glorify God and proclaim the excellencies of Him who called us out of darkness and into his marvelous light.
