Pastor's Corner - Happy Reformation Day!

Dear Friends,
Happy Reformation Day! No, that greeting is not to knock at Halloween nor is it an attempt to be counter-cultural. I actually love Halloween! I love it because it is wonderful time to demonstrate the Gospel in a very tangible way - you get to give and get free gifts (candy) and it is an unprecedented time for neighbors to interact that may go a whole year never speaking to each other. So I encourage you to live out the Gospel by being prepared to greet families and show love to them.
Secondly, Halloween has its roots in church history whether we like it or not. We celebrate Reformation Day on October 31st each year in commemoration of that highly romanticized day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis to the church door at Wittenberg, Germany. This day, November 1st, was the day before All Saints Day, a day mainly celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church to commemorate all the saints of church history. All Saints Day was also All Hallows Day and so the day before would be All Hallows Day Eve from which we get Halloween. On Hallows Eve, Martin Luther sparked the Protestant Reformation which has had an a deep impact on the church and largely influences how Cornerstone worships and understands the Bible and theology today!
This Sunday we will worship, we will celebrate, we will commune with God because we have access to God the Father through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. I'm particularly excited about the beginning of our service as our pre-school children will lead us in worship. We will hear a melody of hymns that they have been learning in Sunday School. Please plan to be seated by 8:55am to hear them lift of their voices to the LORD!
See you Sunday.
By His grace and to His praise,

Wilson

  • In preparation for the sermon: God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? (Numbers 23:19 ESV)
  • A new hymn for the week: If Thou Hast Drawn A Thousand Times
