Pastor's Corner

Dear Church Family,

I would like to write to you about an issue that has been on my heart: Stewarding Technology in Our Home and Church.

This is a wisdom issue! So let's read some wisdom on this:

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.
Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.
Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.
Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.
(Proverbs 4:23–27 ESV)

How can we, as a body of Christ, steward the technology that now dominates our culture? How do we live godly in this digital age? How do we train our children to be wise with technology?

As your pastor, I want you to know this is an issue of godliness and it is something for which we must seek wisdom from the Lord, daily!

The truth is, technology is advancing so fast that it is nearly impossible to keep up. But we must keep up!
I hope that after reading this you will have some tools and some encouragement to help you grow in godliness in this area and shepherd your children’s hearts when it comes to technology.

Author and blogger Brett McCracken wrote in an article published on The Gospel Coalition, “The internet is winning and the church is losing. Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Google are powerful disciple-makers.” If this is true, and it seems to be, then we need to work hard and pray hard to make sure we and our children are being discipled by Jesus and His Word, and not the world.

One of the biggest issues I observe among Christians is consuming too much news and social media. Either through the phone or the television, too much news of the world is invading the mind rather than a steady balance of Scripture and the Good News of the Gospel.

One of the biggest issues I see in Christian households is parents giving their children unlimited and untethered access to the internet where they are exposed to all manner of evil and wickedness without the wisdom to self-govern. This is an area where parents need to take leadership. We cannot sit on the sidelines. Technology is not getting easier or safer.

So how do we handle these things? …. Where do we start when it comes to stewarding technology in our hearts and in our children's hearts?
  1. We must heed the wisdom of Proverbs 4 to guard our hearts and ponder our paths. We need to do this with technology. We should ask, "Do my technology habits bring glory to God? Am I protecting my family?"
  2. We must shepherd the hearts of our children. We must display healthy, consistent and God-honoring uses of technology.
  3. We need to seek accountability in our own lives. Seek out a pastor or an elder if this is a struggle for you.
  4. We need to support one another in community. The local church is the best place for us to do this together - with one another.
  5. We must see this is a spiritual battle and we must employ tools to helps us in the battle.
So, with all that said, how is God calling you to make some changes in your technology habits? How can you begin to take steps to make those changes?
