Pastor's Corner

Dear Church Family and Friends,

One of the important spiritual disciplines that we should all practice in our walk with Christ is meditation. The idea of meditation has unfortunately been identified in our culture with non-Christian systems of thought rather than biblical Christianity. I hope we can change our thinking on that.

In fact, spiritual meditation is commanded by God and modeled the Scriptures. One helpful passage we find that instructs us to do so is in Psalm 1:1-2:  Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

Pastor and professor Donald Whitney defines meditation as :  “Deep thinking on the truths and spiritual realities revealed in Scripture for the purposes of understanding, application, and prayer.” Dr. Whitney goes on to illustrate meditation being like a cup of tea and the tea bag. To get the full effect the tea bag must be submerged into the hot water so that all the flavors seep into the water to make tea.

The Puritan, Thomas Watson, once said, “The reason we come away so cold from reading the word is, because we do not warm ourselves at the fire of meditation.”

So how do we do it? How do we meditate on God's Word? Let me offer some practical suggestion.

First, choose a passage of Scripture and read the selected Scripture carefully. Do this at least 3-5 times. I suggest picking a small New Testament book like Ephesians or Philippians, and then selecting 3-5 verses a day to meditate on. Mediate on it by pray through it and trying understand it.

Once you have done this, employ the O.I.A. method to help you meditate on the passage.

O – observe what you read. Write down any thing that jumps out at you. Try to notice any words or key phrases that are repeated and examine what the passage is plainly about.  Then S.P.E.C.K it! Ask these questions:
  • Sins: Are there any sins to avoid?
  • Promises:  Are there any promises to claim?
  • Examples:  Are there any examples for me to follow?
  • Commands:  Are there any commands to obey?
  • Knowledge:  Is there something about God (the Father, Jesus or Holy Spirit) to be learned?  Is the passage teaching me any knowledge about God like who He is or anything about His character?
I – interpret what you have read. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you the meaning of the passage? What does the passage teach you about God, yourself, grace, Jesus, your Christian life, etc.  What does the passage teach you in light of other Scripture.  This is your chance to write your own commentary and see what God is teaching you.

A – apply what you have read and studied to your own life.  How might this passage help you “grow in your faith?”  Write down plans for action.

I hope this method will aid you and give you more confidence to study God's Word.

See you Sunday!

by His Grace and to His Praise,

Pastor Wilson
