Newsletter | March 31, 2023

Dear Church Family and Friends,

To be honest with you, this has been a tough week. As many of you know, one of our sister churches, Covenant PCA in Nashville, suffered a horrible tragedy. Horrible does not quite capture the real meaning ... it was pure evil. Only evil and demonic forces, that the Scripture clearly speaks about, can explain why something like this would happen. I know myself and others have close connections to this church and the community. We are hurting ... we are sad ... we are looking for hope.

And then tragedy struck our own community just one day later. Lord, have mercy on us!

Of course the best and only place we can find hope is in the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. And it is in His work on the cross that we place all our hope. It was on the cross that He conquered sin and death and that He disarmed the evil powers and authorities. Christ will have the last word, not evil. The Scriptures speak very clearly about this.

Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For [Christ] must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.  (1 Corinthians 15:24–26 ESV)

The best words of hope that I have heard in the midst of all this tragedy is from the pastor of Covenant, Chad Scruggs, who lost his daughter in the shooting. He said, "Through tears we trust that she is in the arms of Jesus who will raise her to life once again."

THAT IS EASTER HOPE! THAT IS RESURRECTION HOPE! In Christ our hope is found! That is what we will celebrate beginning this week, Holy Week. Hosanna in the highest! Jesus has come to save us from all our sin and sorrow.

Until Jesus comes again, let's remember that "He wept." He shares our sorrows for He was a man of sorrows.

Someone reminded me of this quote this past week that I think perfectly captures the heart of Christ. It is from C.S. Lewis' The Magician's Nephew, part of The Chronicles of Narnia series.

Up till then he had been looking at the Lion's great feet and the huge claws on them; now, in his despair, he looked up at its face. What he saw surprised him as much as anything in his whole life. For the tawny face was bent down near his own and (wonder of wonders) great shining tears stood in the Lion's eyes. They were such big, bright tears compared with Digory's own that for a moment he felt as if the Lion must really be sorrier about his Mother than he was himself.

"My son, my son,'" said Aslan. "I know. Grief is great.”

See you Sunday as we celebrate and remember this hope.

by His grace and to His praise,
Pastor Wilson
