Dear Church Family and Friends,

Recently I had the honor to share at a men's event at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church. Thanks to Bob Boerner and our fabulous "Cook Team", we had a wonderful meal and meaningful fellowship. I had the privilege of sharing some thoughts on "The Deep Life." I’d like to share some of those thoughts with you here.

The Deep Life is a term coined by Cal Newport. Newport has written many best-selling books on productivity. It has been helpful to me as a pastor and follower of Christ who seeks to "redeem the time."

Newport states that there are six elements which help define The Deep Life. They are escape, mastery, discipline, appreciation, and awe. I will not pontificate on all of these but I want to point out something about the last element, awe. Newport says we all need something in our life that helps us realize that life is bigger and greater than you and me. He argues this is where religion is helpful! I will take it further and say that awe is where a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ is not only helpful, but necessary for a deep and meaningful life!

This got me thinking about our values as a church. Cornerstone's values are worship, discipleship, care, and mission. Our values are the elements that we have identified from the Scripture as being foundational to a Christ-centered church. We often talk about these values corporately, but I think they are important to us as individuals as they can help us cultivate a life that is deep and full of awe.

I want to invite you to think about these biblical values of worship, discipleship, care, and mission and how they can help you personally have a deep life. What needs to change or what do you need to do differently to incorporate these elements into your life to help you glorify God and enjoy Him forever?

A great place to start is this Sunday, the Lord's Day! Every Lord's Day we gather to worship and stand in awe of the Triune God who sent His Son to die for us! That is worthy of our awe and that is worthy of our very lives.

See you Sunday!

by His grace and to His praise,
Pastor Wilson
