Pastor's Corner - Worship

Dear Friends,

I've heard two comments by friends lately that have been on my mind. One person said, "I feel like the Christmas season is a machine!" And another friend said, "I don't think we can ever focus too much on the wonder of the incarnation and the amazing grace that God shows to us in it."

These two comments are polar opposite from each other in some ways. One person is bemoaning the all the busyness of the Christmas season with the shopping and commercialized aspects of it while the other is contemplating the true meaning of Christmas - God demonstrated His love for us by being born and then dying as a sacrifice of atonement.

So how do we avoid "the machine"? How do we prevent ourselves from being caught up in the hoopla of the holiday season?

I think the answer is worship. Personal Worship, Family Worship, and Corporate Worship. I think that it is imperative for our sanity and our walk with God that every day we find some time to pray and read Scripture. Perhaps it is just one verse or a small devotion thought to get you thinking about the incarnation.

The other thing is Family Worship. My family has been blessed tremendously by the Jesse tree activity that our women's ministry participated in. Every day our children are excited to get the next ornament to hang on the tree and read the Bible story of God's love through Christ in the incarnation.

Finally, there is Corporate Worship. We need each other! We need the local church! God has so designed our lives to be spent in community with one another in the local church to worship Him and grow together. At Cornerstone we are endeavoring to live as followers of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. This year we are doing that by focusing on the Preeminence of Christ in the Incarnation using Colossians 1:15-20. Perhaps you could read, meditate, and pray on a small phrase from this passage every day during Advent to help you worship?

These are just some simple things that we can do to prioritize Christ this Christmas season ... even when things get busy.
 See you Sunday. Merry Christmas!

Preparation for Worship - December 8, 2019

This Sunday's sermon: The Preeminence of Christ in the Incarnation: Creator and Sustainer - Colossians 1:15-17
In preparation for the sermon: “For the Word, realizing that in no other way would the corruption of human beings be undone except, simply, by dying, yet being immortal and the Son of the Father of the Word was not able to die, for this reason he takes to himself a body capable of death, in order that it, participating in the Word who is above all, might be sufficient for death on behalf of all, and through the indwelling Word would remain incorruptible, and so corruption might henceforth cease from all by the grace of the resurrection.” - Athanasius of Alexandria, On the Incarnation
