It's hard to believe that a new year has begun! 2019 still sounds like the future to me ... yet here we are. As we look ahead to the new year, my prayer for you, for me, for Cornerstone is: “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!” (Psalm 90:17 ESV)With a new year comes a new sermon series. This Spring we will be studying the book of Joshua. I've been wanting to preach through this wonderful book for years now. Joshua is an important book in the cannon of the Bible as he chronicles for us how Yahweh God established His people in the Promised Land. The book of Joshua is an important book in the life of the Old Testament Church because we begin to see how God plans to give His people rest by establishing them as His people, in His place, bringing glory to Him and ultimately to the nations.The heart of the book of Joshua centers around one important truth: Yahweh God is faithful and He will do what He has promised. We find this promise many times in Joshua, most notably at the end of chapter 21 after all the tribes of Israel were allotted their land, just as Yahweh God has promised to Moses: “Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.” (Joshua 21:45 ESV)This promise will be the focus of our study: Yahweh God, our covenant God, keeps His promises. And of course we will connect the promises of God in the Old Testament to their ultimate fulfillment in Christ. As the Apostle Paul explains, “For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in him it is always Yes. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” (2 Corinthians 1:19–22 ESV)I'm looking forward to this study with you.
