Pastor's Corner - Call To Worship

Dear Friends, Continuing in this series of discussion in the Pastor's Corner on the Order of Worship or Liturgy, we come now to the Call to Worship. The Call to Worship is exactly what the words mean - it is a call to God's people to come in to God's presence, on God's Day, to worship Him.  The reason we have a Call to Worship comes from the biblical precedent found in Scripture. In various places in Scripture, we find God's people being summoned to worship, to sing, to come into the presence of God's people. The Call to Worship reminds us why we are in worship. The Call to Worship is about God. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.  (Psalm 29:2 ESV) Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!  (Psalm 95:6 ESV) Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! (Psalm 100:1–2 ESV) Another thing to note about the Call to Worship is that it is corporate and often participatory. Corporate worship is designed to be just that - something we do corporately, as a body. Too often, we view going to church as something we simply go to watch and to hear a motivational "talk". But that is not how the Lord designed the Lord's Day worship. Corporate worship is something we do together - we are called to participate with one another. Often we will use a psalm in our call to worship because of their corporate nature. The psalms are the worship book of the Church. The Call to Worship is an excellent place to use them.  This Sunday, keep these things in mind as you are asked to stand. Read the Call to Worship before the service to prepare your heart. And when you recite the "people" portion after the pastor, say it with conviction!  See you Sunday!  by His grace and to His praise,  Wilson
