Pastor's Corner - What is an Order of Worship
| Dear Friends, A few weeks ago, I wrote about Doxological Evangelism and promised that I would take some time in future pastor's corners to write about our order of worship that we use during Sunday morning worship. What is an Order of Worship or Liturgy? It is just that - it is the formal way in which we order our worship service on Sunday mornings for the praise and glory of God. The word liturgy is an older term that we don't use as much, but it refers to the form, or order, of a worship service. The idea is that God is a God of order and He cares about the way He is worshipped. Our worship is guided by what is classically called the Regulative Principle. A definition of the Regulative Principle is found in the Westminster Confession of Faith 21:1: The light of nature showeth that there is a God, who hath lordship and sovereignty over all, is good, and doth good unto all, and is therefore to be feared, loved, praised, called upon, trusted in, and served, with all the heart, and with all the soul, and with all the might. But the acceptable way of worshiping the true God is instituted by himself, and so limited by his own revealed will, that he may not be worshiped according to the imaginations and devices of men, or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible representation, or any other way not prescribed in the Holy Scripture. At Cornerstone, we use the bulletin as a guide to help us worship and follow along in the service. Each week, we begin on Monday morning planning the service and choosing songs and Scriptures to help aide us in worshiping our glorious God. That is why each week we send the bulletin out through the email newsletter on Friday so that you may prepare your hearts to worship God. The reason so much effort and energy is put into the bulletin is because it is our guide to help us reverently and wholeheartedly worship our holy God. Furthermore, at Cornerstone, we earnestly desire that our worship service be participatory. Attending a Sunday morning worship service should not be about a concert, a show, or listening to a person give a talk. No, a worship service is the people of God gathering together on a special day, called the Lord's Day, to corporately come together and praise the living God. The bulletin is designed in such a way that we can accomplish this goal of corporate worship. All this to say, this these are the foundational principles that guide our worship service. In the coming weeks, I will begin to emphasize the elements listed in our order of service (i.e. Call to Worship, Invocation, etc...) See you Sunday. by His grace and to His praise, Wilson |
