Pastor's Corner

Dear Church Family and Friends,

This past week we said goodbye to our brother Earl "Cammack" Ricks. Earl was 97 years old and the father of David and Tim Ricks. I will miss him and his smile.

Earl lived an amazing life. He was a WWII veteran but most importantly, he was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. You can watch him tell some of his stories on a story the local news did on him by clicking here

I will miss him coming up to me after the service to tell me things that he was learning and applying to his life from the sermon. This was a great encouragement and example to me that we never stop growing in the Christian life. We are to always seek to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ ... even it we live 100 years on this earth!

I had to privileging of visiting Earl before he died. During our visit we talked and prayed and I read from Romans 8:28-39. This is a wonderful passage with a massive promise! That nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

My last memory of Earl will be my favorite. As I read Romans 8:38-39, Earl recited these words from memory with me:  “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

My friendship with Earl and other believers much older than me have been a great blessing in my life and have got me thinking ... do other believers in the church have friends who are older brothers and sisters in Christ that they can talk to and seek wisdom and counsel? ... This should not be an odd or unusual thing -- it should be a normal thing! We should all have older, wiser friends in Christ that we can learn from and grow from their experiences.

It also got me thinking about a modern problem that many of us face but especially our young people. We think we can gain wisdom by reading things on the internet. This is a big lie of our age! The internet is not where you go to get wisdom ... it is where you go to get information!  Wisdom comes from God's Word (like Proverbs and Psalms) and through the wisdom we gain by being mentored and discipled by others who have gained wisdom and knowledge through years and years of experience of walking with the Lord.

So I ask you again:  Do you have older brothers and sisters in Christ whom you are developing a friendships with so that you too can learn and grow from their wisdom?

I'm glad that Earl Ricks was one of my friends that I learned a lot from. I especially have learned that hiding God's Word in your heart -- that is a lasting thing -- because that is what we want coming out when our memory fades and the day dawns in this life.

See you Sunday!

by His Grace and to His Praise,

Pastor Wilson
