Dear Church Family and Friends,
This Sunday traditionally marks Reformation Sunday, the last Sunday in October of each year. It was around this date in 1517 that Martin Luther and the early Reformers sparked the Reformation that quickly spread throughout Europe and then to North America. Praise God for the Reformation!
We can be thankful for many contributions of the Reformation and the Reformers but chief among them is a recovery of the Sovereignty of God in all things. It was the late scholar and Dutch politician, Abraham Kyper, who famously said in his 1880 North American Speech, “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: 'Mine!'"
I can think of no more important truth to grab hold of today than this as we are a few weeks away from an important national election in our country. As Christians, it is our duty to seek the welfare of our country and to promote justice and biblical ethics whenever and wherever we can. But, we must also not put our hope in man. “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” (Psalm 20:7 ESV) Let's pray for our country. Let's pray for our leaders. Let's pray for justice and truth. But most importantly, let's practice good theology.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the King and Head of His Church and everything and everyone belongs to Him! Paul proclaims in Colossians, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” (Colossians 1:15–16 ESV)
Let's remember the sovereignty and providence of God in all things on November 5th and all the days after this. We know WHO has already won! Let's praise and worship Him this coming Lord's Day.
See you Sunday!
by His grace and to His praise,
Pastor Wilson
