Dear Church Family and Friends,

This past weekend we had a wonderful gathering at The Vision with over 50 men from Cornerstone. I had the privilege of talking with the men about Spiritual Leadership in the Home ... something for which I am in desperate need of God's daily grace to grow in this area.

So, how do we lead in our homes? How can men fight against the sinful tendency to be passive in their leadership? Here are five Spirit-lead and Spirit-directed activities. They are in no particular order.

  1. Read: God has given us a book and He calls us to read this book all the days of our life. Men are called to be readers. Deuteronomy 17:18-20 lays this out very well when instructions are given to the king -- he is to read God's word every day to follow the Lord his God faithfully. I think this means practically that we need to cultivate our devotional lives so that we are ministering to ourselves and those under our care from a place of strength, not weakness. Every good leader is intentional about His devotional life. If you need a resource I highly recommend Be Thou My Vision. You would never go a week without eating and try to do your job. You wouldn’t go run the Cotton Row race without training. So why would you fulfill your calling to work and to keep without being equipped by God’s Word?

  2. Prayer: Men are are to have a nurturing ministry of prayer with their families. Richard Phillips states in his excellent book The Masculine Mandate, “Prayer, like Scripture, is an absolute nonnegotiable element of faithful parenting [and I would add marriages], one that communicates our sincere love to our children’s hearts and shows them our reliance on the Lord’s sovereign provision of grace.”  Our children need to grow up hearing and experiencing their father’s praying with and for them. If you are lost on how to do this, I encourage you to seek the counsel of a wise father you respect. Cultivate prayer with yourself and your family.

  3. Worship: The rhythm of corporate worship is good for the soul. The Bible tells us not to neglect this important discipline (Hebrews 10:25). Being around others is God's design to help us grow and flourish. Did you know that churches used to practice church discipline against those who skipped church without a valid reason?

  4. Worldview: God calls us to cultivate a  worldview of the world that is shaped by His Word. This is called a biblical worldview. One of the biggest issues I see with men right now is way too much time spent on their phones, on media, and on news. And this habit is shaping in them a worldly world-view. So how can men change some things up in their lives where the news, the culture, the world, is not dictating how you feel but rather the truth that is in Christ? Its is going to take some intentional change of habits.

  5. Incarnational: This is from the Latin word carne. Incarnational means in the flesh. We are called to be present in the lives of those whom God has called us to lead. Just like Jesus became incarnate, His ministry models for us what we are to be doing. This means that God is calling men to be present with their wife, their kids, and their Christian family. One of the best ways you can be a leader is by being present with your people.

It is my prayer that these practical suggestions will point us to Jesus, who is our model for these things. He is the ultimate leader we are to emulate. And so when we say we are Christians, what that should mean is that we follow Jesus Christ. He is our master, our Lord, our guide. When we read the Gospels and read about Jesus’ life, don’t just read them to check a box that you had a quiet time for the day — but read them and watch Jesus. Notice what He does … how He leads … how He loves. We can’t go wrong following Jesus.

See you Sunday!

by His grace and to His praise,
Pastor Wilson
