Dear Church Family and Friends,

Please join me in praising God and congratulating Chris Moody on completing his ordination trials in Providence Presbytery on Tuesday, February 6th! “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” (Romans 10:15 ESV) We are very grateful that the Lord sustained Chris during his examinations.

Chris will be ordained on Sunday, February 18th during the 8:30 am worship service. Please join us! There will be a short reception right after the service before Sunday School. Chris's new call at Cornerstone will be Assistant Pastor to Students and Families.

This is the second time in four months that we have had the privilege of ordaining a man to the Gospel ministry. John Summers was ordained in November of 2023. You may have noticed in our worship bulletin or on the website that we make a distinction between an assistant pastor and an associate pastor. I think it would be helpful for me to explain the difference.

An Assistant Pastor is called by the Session and serves at the will of the Session to fulfill the work of ministry to which they have been assigned. An Associate Pastor is called by the congregation, sits on the Session, and has voting privileges. John and Chris will serve as assistant pastors and Brian Russ will continue to serve as Associate Pastor. As Senior Pastor (and once only pastor), I am called by the congregation and I serve on the Session as the moderator.

I think it would be wise for you to know why the ordination of a man to Gospel ministry is important. It is primarily important because the Lord Jesus has raised up and called men to lead His church. He does that through the elders or overseers of His church.

When a man is ordained, he is called upon to take vows before God and His people that he will take up his calling with all faithfulness to Christ and His Word. Therefore a candidate for ordination is called upon to take solemn vows in fulfilment of his ministry. The vows that an ordination candidate takes are found in our Book of Church Order (BCO 21):

  1. Do you believe the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, as originally given, to be the inerrant Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice?

  2. Do you sincerely receive and adopt the Confession of Faith and the Catechisms of this Church, as containing the system of doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures; and do you further promise that if at any time you find yourself out of accord with any of the fundamentals of this system of doctrine, you will on your own initiative, make known to your Presbytery the change which has taken place in your views since the assumption of this ordination vow?

  3. Do you approve of the form of government and discipline of the Presbyterian Church in America, in conformity with the general principles of Biblical polity?

  4. Do you promise subjection to your brethren in the Lord?

  5. Have you been induced, as far as you know your own heart, to seek the office of the holy ministry from love to God and a sincere desire to promote His glory in the Gospel of His Son?

  6. Do you promise to be zealous and faithful in maintaining the truths of the Gospel and the purity and peace and unity of the Church, whatever persecution or opposition may arise unto you on that account?

  7. Do you engage to be faithful and diligent in the exercise of all your duties as a Christian and a minister of the Gospel, whether personal or relational, private or public; and to endeavor by the grace of God to adorn the profession of the Gospel in your manner of life, and to walk with exemplary piety before the flock of which God shall make you overseer?

  8. Are you now willing to take this call as Assistant Pastor, agreeable to your declaration when accepting the *Session's* call? And do you, relying upon God for strength, promise to discharge the duties of a pastor?

Please be in prayer for Chris as he prepares to take up this call. Praise God for His provision to His church in raising up faithful labors to preach, teach, and lead among us.

See you Sunday!

by His grace and to His praise,

Pastor Wilson
