Dear Church Family and Friends,
This past week we began our Advent sermon series on The Glory of God in the Incarnation, looking at selected passages in the book of Hebrews. Advent is about anticipation. This anticipation builds upon an Old Testament theme that began in Genesis 3:15 when God promised that a snake crusher would come to rescue us. Ever since that moment, the world has been anticipating a Redeemer who would come and save us.
During the whole Old Testament time of anticipation, God raised up prophets, priests, and kings to mediate the covenant relationship between Himself and His people. The prophets proclaimed the message of salvation. The priest mediated the animal sacrifices for sins that were only temporary atonements. The successive kings and rulers anticipated the hope that a forever ruler would come and usher in the Messianic age. But no mere man could live up to the expectation of executing these offices with sinless perfection. Could there be One who would come to fulfill all three of these offices?
Our Baptist friends have a helpful statement in the 1689 London Baptist Confession which states, “Christ, and Christ alone, is fitted to be mediator between God and man. He is the prophet, priest, and king of the church of God” (8.9). Christ is exalted in the incarnation, but His exaltation is not just in Him being born— it will increase in His humiliation. Join us this Sunday as we consider the humiliation of Christ in the incarnation.
In other news, please join me in welcoming Jordan Busk to our staff as the new Communications Assistant. We give thanks to the Lord for Emily Boggs and her service to us as the Communications Assistant. We are excited for her and Jared's child they are expecting soon and for her opportunity to care for her expectant daughter.
Jordan is a Huntsville native and comes to us with experience working in several local churches. She is married to Jon and they have two children, Nora and Barrett. She is a Mississippi State graduate, so I am thankful to have a fellow sufferer on staff!
See you Sunday! Come let us adore Him!
by His grace and to His praise,
Pastor Wilson
